JOIN STUDY

What can you expect when you join PREVENTABLE

The purpose of PREVENTABLE is to answer the question: Can a commonly used heart medication prevent dementia, disability, and heart disease? You may be a good fit if you are 75 years or older, not already taking a statin, and have not been diagnosed with heart disease, dementia, or have a serious disability.

All study procedures can be done by phone in the comfort of your home or in person in a clinic. The study team will collect information about your health. You will be randomly assigned to a statin or a placebo. The placebo looks like the study drug but doesn't have medicine in it. On the first Tuesday of every month, the PREVENTABLE team will lead an online information session. You, your family members, and friends are invited to learn more about the study and ask any questions you may have. Register here .

In this video you will learn more about what will happen if you choose to join the PREVENTABLE study. You may find this information helpful before you talk to or meet with the study team. How will PREVENTABLE test your brain health?

PREVENTABLE will measure your cognitive functioning. The PREVENTABLE study includes questions to see how well you remember things or if you have trouble coming up with words or paying attention. To measure physical functioning, you will be asked to do some simple tests, like standing in different positions, walking a short distance, and getting up out of a chair. Watch this video to learn more about these tests and how we will use the results.

Learn more about the cognitive and physical function tests used in PREVENTABLE. Information from these assessments show researchers how the brain is working without having to do fancy, expensive tests such as an MRI or a CAT scan.

Be sure to answer when we call!

All PREVENTABLE participants will receive a telephone call from a call center interviewer within 21 days of your clinic visit to follow up on how you are doing. Meet the Call Center Team. The telephone call will take approximately 20-40 minutes and will provide researchers with information related to memory, thinking, and physical function.

Call center interviewers may also call your trusted contact for some additional information about your overall health! When the PREVENTABLE call center calls, the caller ID will display 336-716-9997 or 336-721-7722, and, depending on your phone carrier, it may say "Winston-Salem, NC" or "Wake Forest". Be sure to answer when we call, and call us back if we've missed you!
